Renaissance Health Service Corporation Contributes to Healthy Capital District Initiative $4,000 donation will support the Seal a Smile program for children. OKEMOS, Mich. – (May 16, 2007) – Renaissance Health Service Corporation (RHSC), a not-for-profit organization that specializes in affordable health care, dental benefits and employee benefit management services, recently made a $4,000 donation to the Healthy Capital District Initiative to support its Seal a Smile program in Albany, N.Y.
“As State budget cuts have eliminated our funding, we are now dependent upon donations from corporate citizens like Renaissance,” said Kevin Jobin-Davis, executive director of the Healthy Capital District Initiative. “Renaissance’s contribution will enable us to continue providing free oral hygiene products to the children who need it most.”
Seal a Smile is a joint venture of the Healthy Capital District Initiative and Whitney M. Young Health Services that provides oral hygiene education, cleanings, fluoride, screening for decay, and sealant applications to 3,000 children each year, including uninsured, through an elementary school program operating in Albany and Rensselaer Counties. Forty-eight percent of the children in the participating schools have untreated decay, averaging nearly four untreated cavities per child. The funds provided by Renaissance will be used to provide all children participating in the Seal a Smile program with toothbrushes, brushing timers, toothpaste, and floss.
“Tooth decay is the number one most prevalent chronic childhood disease and it is also one of the most preventable,” said Dr. Philip Wenk, executive vice president of Renaissance. “Programs like Seal a Smile help ensure the overall health of children in this community, and also help them to be better and more productive students.”

Established in 2004, the Seal a Smile program is an oral health program for underserved children in Albany and Rensselaer counties. The program provides oral health education, screenings, fluoride treatment and sealants to children in schools where more than 35 percent of the student body qualifies for the federal free lunch program. The goal of Seal a Smile is to improve preventive dental care to at-risk children in the Capital District and expand access to health and dental care through enrollment of uninsured children in Medicaid or Child Health Plus. Children in need of primary dental services are referred to an appropriate provider for further dental care.
